Q: Showing the Pop-Up Stopper Pro Toolbar
A: Pop-Up Stopper should automatically install itself in your Internet Explorer Toolbar, below your address bar. If it does not, simply select Toolbars from the View menu in Internet Explorer, and select Panicware Pop-Up Stopper. Please note there is a known problem with some older versions of Internet Explorer 5.00, which cause additionally installed toolbars to be named 'Radio'. If you are running Internet Explorer 5.00 and cannot find Panicware Pop-Up Stopper in your toolbar menu, please try selecting 'Radio' to open or close our toolbar. Please note this is a problem in Internet Explorer, and not with Pop-Up Stopper Pro.

Q: How to configure the Pop-Up Stopper Toolbar
Pop-Up Stopper will display the following toolbar inside Internet Explorer.

Surfing Tools

Do not allow (block) pop-up windows
Pop-Up Stopper can optionally block or control web pop-up and pop-under windows as you surf. Pop-Up Stopper technology attempts to allow only legitimate browser windows, however occasionally Pop-Up Stopper Pro may block a window you wish to see. Pop-Up Stopper can optionally notify you with a sound, and you can easily hold the CTRL key to allow a window or new link to open! Pop-Up Stopper technology blocks pop-ups without using proxies or keyword lists. Please note: If normal mode is not blocking all pop-ups in your browser, you may choose Aggressive mode in Preferences for a more strict pop-up control setting. You may also choose to have Pop-Up Stopper allow pop-ups from certain sites, such as Hotmail or Yahoo, which may incorporate pop-ups that you wish to view.

    Toggle pop-up sound on/off
Pop-Up Stopper can optionally notify you with a sound when a pop-up window has been blocked. You may change the sound in Pop-Up Stopper Preferences, or you may disable or enable it quickly with this Toolbar option.

Allow pop-up windows from this site (domain)
You may optionally allow pop-up windows from a web site. Clicking this button will add the current web site (domain) to the list of sites at which pop-up windows are allowed. Please note that some web sites have several different domains within the site. You might have to add the domains separately using the Allow pop-ups button. You may edit this list in the Pop-Up Stopper Preferences.

Open the folder where you last downloaded a file
This feature allows you to open the last download location of any files you download. Simply download a file, then click this button for easy reference to the last download location. This feature is also useful to periodically clean up download files you no longer need - simply open the folder to organize.

    Copy current URL to clipboard
The current URL will be copied to the Windows Clipboard to allow easy pasting into an e-mail or document.

    Pop-Up Stopper Options
Pop-Up Stopper comes with many options to make surfing easier. Pop-Up Stopper Preferences, and many other useful features, are located in the Options menu.

    General

The Pop-Up Stopper general preferences allow you to control the location of the Pop-Up Stopper Pro toolbar.

Lock toolbar below address bar in Internet Explorer
When checked, this option forces Pop-Up Stopper to move its toolbar directly below your address bar in Internet Explorer. If you wish to move the toolbar to a new location, simply clear the check next to this option and the toolbar will reappear where it was last positioned. Note that Internet Explorer 6.x provides this feature also, so you may wish to leave this option not checked when using Internet Explorer 6.x.

    Pop-Up Control
Pop-Up Stopper provides powerful pop-up control options to prevent pop-up windows while you are surfing. Pop-Up Stopper also provides the ability to allow certain pop-up windows, and provides statistics as to the number of pop-up windows blocked.

    Pop-Up Notification
Pop-Up Stopper can optionally play a sound when a pop-up window is prevented.

Play a sound when a pop-up window is prevented
Checking this option will cause Pop-Up Stopper to play your selected sound when a pop-up window is prevented. You may change the sound by selecting the Browse… option.

    Browse
Selects the sound you wish to play when a pop-up window is prevented. Pop-Up Stopper comes with several entertaining sounds to alert you when a pop-up is prevented.

    Test
Plays the current sound to allow you to preview the sound that will be played when a pop-up windows is prevented.

    Pop-Up Control Mode
Pop-Up Stopper provides two different pop-up control modes in addition to several options regarding pop-up allow keys and error dialog closing.

    Standard Mode
Pop-Up Stopper can optionally block or control web pop-up and pop-under windows as you surf. Pop-Up Stopper technology attempts to allow only legitimate browser windows, while still allowing you to follow new links and visit legitimate sites that open new browser windows. Pop-Up Stopper can optionally notify you with a sound when a new window has been blocked, and you can easily hold the CTRL key to allow a window or new link to open! Pop-Up Stopper technology blocks pop-ups without using proxies or keyword lists. You may configure or disable sound from this menu, as well as from the browser toolbar sound button.

    Aggressive Mode
You may enable Aggressive mode if you find Pop-Up Stopper is not blocking all of the pop-up windows you wish to block. Pop-Up Stopper can optionally notify you with a sound when a pop-up window has been blocked, and you can easily hold the CTRL key to allow a window or new link to open! Pop-Up Stopper technology blocks pop-ups without using proxies or keyword lists. You may configure or disable sound from this menu, as well as from the browser toolbar sound button.

    Pop-Up Allow Keys
Pop-Up Stopper will allow a pop-up window when clicking a link on a web page when one of these keys is held down while clicking the new link.

    Automatic Error Dialog Closing
When a pop-up window is prevented, Internet Explorer may occasionally display an error message to alert you that the window was blocked. Pop-Up Stopper can automatically close these windows for you if this option is checked. These errors mean nothing other than that a pop-up window has been blocked, and the errors do not mean that an actual error has occurred on your computer or browser.

    Allowed Pop-Ups List
Pop-Up Stopper keeps a list of the domains for which you choose to allow pop-up windows. You may use the Remove Domain button if you no longer wish to allow pop-ups from a listed domain. You may use the Clear list button to clear the entire list of allowed domains.

    Pop-Up Statistics
Pop-Up Stopper keeps a list of most pop-ups blocked. Keep in mind some pop-ups are actually blocked before they even load to save bandwidth, and those stats may not be recorded. You may use the Visit URL button to visit the site that served the ad. You can Delete Selected URLS or Erase All URLS from the list and begin counting all over again!

Q: Why do I still get pop-up windows from ClickSpring and OTHER ad blocking companies?
A: Pop-Up Stopper should block all Internet pop-up and pop-under windows. There are known issues with a new ad-serving program installed by ClickSpring, which is an ad-serve that serves ads for OTHER ad blockers. These ads are not from Panicware the makers of Pop-Up Stopper.. To remove this ad-serve:

  • Press Ctrl-Alt-Del once to bring up the End Task dialogue. Highlight "WINSERVS" or "WINSERVN" and select End Task. (It may take a few moments for a "not responding" warning to appear. Press End Task again.)
  • Remove WINSERVS.EXE or WINSERVN from your StartUp folder. This can be done by going to Start > Settings > Taskbar, and clicking on the Start Menu tab. Select "Remove". Find the StartUp folder on the list that appears, select it if necessary, and delete the WINSERVS or WINSERVN entry that appears there.
You may also be receiving pop-up ads from Adware or Spyware programs that you have unknowingly installed, such as Download Accelerator, Gator, and Gozillia, AudioGalaxy, Morpheus, Kazaa, eDonkey, GAIN, etc. If you are running any of the file sharing applications, it is advised you do both a VIRUS scan and a SPYWARE scan.

Top >>

Q. I'm running Zone Alarm Pro and I can't open new links and/or new browser windows.
A: Zone Alarm Pro has its own pop-up blocking feature that inserts some code into each and every web page. With this code in place, there is no way a page can open any new window. For a helpful article on a workaround for this problem please review the following: HERE (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q281679) Please read the entire article first, as the last step, listed as Workaround, may solve your problem in just a few keystrokes!

Q. I cannot hear a sound when a pop-up window is blocked.
A: Please make sure you have picked a sound from Preferences, which you can access by right-clicking on the Pop-Up Stopper hand icon by your clock in your system tray. It is not enough to just have the check by 'Play a Sound'. You need to pick the sound also!

Q. My Privacy Report history items still show up even after cleaning the items.
A: The Privacy Report will report any items that are currently listed in Microsoft's Internet Index system for your Browser History, Cache and Cookies. If you have multiple user accounts on your system, or your system crashed or did not terminate normally, there may be items that are reported as being available that really do not "exist" as a file on your system. Since the items do not exist as a file, the information regarding the item is not available for viewing. Panicware is revising the Privacy Report to only show items that currently exist. You may reset these internal indexes by clicking the Tools Menu in Internet Explorer, then clicking Internet Options... Select the Delete Files.... option to delete and reset the internal indexes, and then click the Clear History button to reset the Browser History indexes. After doing this step, you may need to reboot before your history will be shown as completely cleared. From this point forward, the Privacy Report should show only actual data that is in your history, and Panicware's cleaning systems will continue to clean the real data files from your computer.

Q. My Icon Disappeared and I can't get it back.
A: The disappearing icon problem is caused by an obscure bug in the Microsoft Windows XP Home and Pro operating systems. This can happen to any program that places an icon in the system tray next to the clock. A solution that has seemed to work for many users:

  1. Reboot your computer
  2. Log off after the computer reboots - this can be done via the Start Menu
  3. Log back on and the icon should reappear

Q. I keep getting pop-ups that look like Windows Messenger notices
A: Some pop-up ad windows may not be blocked by traditional pop-up blocking software. These pop up ad windows are typically generated by spyware/scumware applications. To compliment your pop up stopping tool Panicware is offering Pop-Up Scanner. Pop-Up Scanner is not a replacement for your pop-up blocking product, but is designed to work in conjunction with your pop-up blocking product.

These spyware/scumware applications are:

Windows Messenger Service Pop-Ups
These ads appear out of nowhere, and are entitled "Messenger Service". You can turn off your messaging services on Windows NT, 2000 and XP, or, you can use Pop-Up Scanner to close these windows for you as fast as they open!

To turn off the messenger service:

  1. Click on the Start button and open the control panel.
  2. Open the Performance and Maintenance control panel and go to Administrative Tools.
  3. Now double-click on Services, then scroll to Messenger.
  4. Double-click Messenger and click Stop to stop the service.
  5. Change the startup type to Disable

PurityScan Ad Server
The PurityScan Ad Server (WINSERVS) is installed on computers when the user visits www.purityscan.com and initiates the "FREE Scan" to scan your computer for potentially offensive material. In reality, the product installs its own pop-up ad serving software on your computer that will display pop-up ads when you surf the web. The product does NOT provide a standard uninstall in the Control Panel and places itself inside your startup group so it starts every time you start your computer!

NetSearch/IntelligentExplorer
The NetSearch/Intelligent Explorer toolbar is a popular search assistant that unfortunately will completely remove any other toolbars such as Pop-Up Stopper, Yahoo or Google that you may have installed in your browser. The program may also log each url you visit.
